Capturing your Essence
Creating a truly flattering and natural portrait requires a thoughtful and collaborative approach. Here's how we'll work together:
1. Consultation
Understanding Your Vision (1 Hour)
We'll begin with a personal consultation to get to know you. This allows me to understand your personality, your life story, and how you perceive yourself and how you wish to be seen. We'll discuss clothing choices that complement your style and the desired mood of the portrait. We'll explore posing options, considering whether a seated or standing pose, the desired framing (head and shoulders, full figure, etc.), and the most flattering angle of your face.We can also discuss potential locations for the portrait, if desired.
2. Alla Prima Session
Bringing Your Portrait to Life (3 Hours)
During the alla prima session, we'll focus on capturing the initial impression and essence of your portrait.I'll carefully set up flattering lighting to enhance your natural beauty.I may begin with initial sketches to establish composition and form.Throughout the session, I'll take reference photographs to aid in the studio work.Short breaks every 20 minutes will ensure you remain comfortable and relaxed.
3. Studio Refinement
Enhancing Your Portrait
Following the alla prima session, I'll bring the portrait back to my studio for careful refinement.This stage involves subtle adjustments to color, tone, and detail, ensuring a polished and captivating final piece.
4. Atelier Portrait
A Deeper Dive (Multiple Sessions)
For an atelier portrait, which involves a more extensive and layered approach, we may schedule multiple alla prima sessions.The majority of the work will then be completed in the studio, utilizing the reference photographs and the initial alla prima work as a foundation.This method allows for a more detailed and nuanced portrait.
About Me
I am a skilled portrait artist who lives and works in Mississauga, Ontario. From a young age, I have always been watchful and observant and drawn to art. Thinking to be more practical, I studied physics at university, and then product design at the Ontario College of Art and Design, leading to a career in software product design. On retirement, I realized I could at last pursue a career as a fine artist.
With my diverse background and life experience, rigorous design schooling and classical atelier training, I am an uncommon portrait painter. I can capture my subjects with an excellent likeness, in a confident and painterly style, and show an authentic empathy with my subject.
